Migrate Pidgin Settings From One Computer To Another

1. Install Pidgin on the new computer.
2. From the old computer Locate the ".purple" folder which contains the logs and settings for accounts as well as look and feel of pidgin. This is usually in the C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\.pidgin
3. Copy the whole folder from the old machine and replace it in the same path in the new machine.
4. Start up Pidgin in the new computer and it should work just the same as the old one.

Thanks, that did help. Note for Vista users (like me):
The directory you want to migrate your settings to and from is
C:\Users\(yourname)\AppData\Roaming
The .purple directory should be in that folder.
NOTE: The folder AppData is hidden!
Hope that helps someone, but your short tutorial is very good indeed and helped me find out that it is possible to migrate those settings.

copy .purple in your home to the new home
BTW if you sudo to move the folder from one user home DONT FORGET to CHOWN the folder to the new user next...

I just migrated from WXP to W7, and have had no luck migrating my pidgin accounts/settings.

I copied my old .purple directory to the place where the fresh installation of pidgin put one:

C:\Users\myid\AppData\Roaming\.purple

(Replacing the default one that came in from installation.)

But pidgin still says:

Welcome to Pidgin! You have no accounts enabled...

and pursuing that, I get: You have no accounts configured...

Anyone have some insight?

In Explorer, just type "%APPDATA%" without the quotes and from that folder you have to copy the .pidgin folder to the same place "%APPDATA%" in Windows 7.

Try re-copying the folder from XP to 7 and check. Also make sure you upgrade pidgin in XP to the same version you are using in 7 before copying the folder.

I tried to migrate my account from one Vista computer to another via this method, and at first it didn't recognize the information and asked me to make a new account.

After a reboot it did take effect. So if you try this and it doesn't seem to work, restart and see if that helps.
